September 2026 is the main intake for UK universities. UK Masters degrees are typically 1-year programmes (12 months), which makes the timeline tighter but the overall cost much lower than the 2-year Canadian Masters. About 25 percent of Kerala students aiming for the UK go through us for this intake each cycle.
This page lays out the month-by-month timeline from now through September 2026 arrival, with all key checkpoints. Also flagged: the Graduate Route changes from 1 January 2027 that affect students graduating in September 2027.
1.Where you should be right now (May 2026)
- IELTS-UKVI Academic: Completed with 6.5 overall and 6.0 in each band (university minimum, some require 7.0+ for specific programmes). For UK student visa, IELTS-UKVI specifically is needed, not standard IELTS.
- University applications: Submitted to 4 to 6 UK universities by January-March 2026 round.
- Offer letters and CAS: Unconditional offers should be in hand by May. CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) letter is the key document for visa application; expect it from May to July.
- Financial proof: Bank statements showing tuition + 9 months living costs (post-11 November 2025 rates: £1,529/month for London = £13,761 max, £1,171/month outside London = £10,539 max) maintained for 28 consecutive days.
- Education loan: Pre-sanction letter from HDFC Credila, Avanse, or ICICI for typical ₹40 to 60 lakh UK Masters loan.
2.June 2026: CAS letter and visa preparation
- CAS letter: Universities issue CAS after you accept their offer and pay the deposit (£2,000 to £5,000 typically). CAS is the digital reference number you need for the visa application.
- Tuition deposit: Paid by mid-June to secure CAS issuance. Some universities issue CAS earlier; some only after full first instalment.
- Financial documentation: Bank statements compiled showing required maintenance funds maintained for 28 days. If using education loan, the loan sanction letter substitutes for personal funds.
- ATAS certificate: If your programme is on the Academic Technology Approval Scheme list (STEM Masters and PhDs), apply for ATAS certificate. Free, takes 4 to 6 weeks.
- TB test: If required, schedule with IOM-approved clinic in Chennai or Bangalore (no Kerala approved centres as of 2026). Result valid 6 months.
3.July 2026: Submit Student visa application
Aim to submit by mid-July for September entry. UK Student visa processing is typically 3 weeks but can stretch to 6 weeks during peak season.
- Visa application: Online at gov.uk. Fee £558 (post-8 April 2026), paid online.
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year (post-8 April 2026). For 1-year Masters + 4 months Graduate Route post-study work, IHS payable upfront for the full Student visa duration.
- Biometrics: Scheduled at VFS UK centre in Trivandrum or Kochi. Fee approx ₹1,500.
- Document upload: CAS letter, passport, photograph, financial proof, IELTS-UKVI TRF, education loan sanction letter, ATAS certificate (if applicable), TB test certificate (if applicable), parental consent if under 18.
4.August to September 2026: Decision and pre-departure
- Visa decision: Expect by mid-August. Pass: passport returned with 30-day vignette and details of where to collect BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) in the UK.
- Travel booking: Flight to arrive 5 to 10 days before classes start. UK academic year typically begins last week of September.
- Accommodation: University-managed accommodation must be confirmed by July. Private accommodation in London tightens significantly in August.
- Forex and initial cash: Forex card with £2,000 to £3,000 loaded. Some cash for first-week essentials.
- BRP collection: Within 10 days of arrival in the UK, collect your Biometric Residence Permit from the designated UK Post Office. The BRP is your ID and proof of right to stay.
- National Insurance number: If you plan to work part-time, apply for NI number after arrival. Takes 4 to 6 weeks.
5.Education loan checkpoints
UK Masters education loan timeline (typical ₹40 to 60 lakh):
- By April 2026: Pre-sanction letter in hand.
- By June 2026: Full sanction letter for visa submission.
- By July 2026: First disbursement: tuition deposit and first semester fees to the UK university.
- By September 2026: Living expenses tranche to your UK bank account.
- Ongoing: Periodic disbursements per university's fee schedule and living expense plan.
Section 80E tax benefit applies (full interest paid is tax-deductible). TCS rate is 0.5 percent on remittances funded by education loan, vs 5 percent on self-funded transfers above ₹7 lakh.
6.Graduate Route planning (important 2027 change)
Your Student visa permits you to apply for the Graduate Route after course completion. If you graduate in September 2027 from a September 2026 intake:
- Current rule (until 31 December 2026): Graduate Route grants 2 years for Bachelors and Masters graduates.
- From 1 January 2027: Graduate Route reduces to 18 months for Bachelors and Masters. PhD remains 3 years.
- Your specific case: Graduating September 2027 means you apply for Graduate Route in September 2027 under the 18-month rules. Plan job search and Skilled Worker transition accordingly.
If you have flexibility, consider whether a January 2026 intake (already past) or September 2025 intake (also past) would have allowed you to apply for Graduate Route under the 2-year rules. For September 2026 entrants, 18-month Graduate Route is the reality.
7.The 5 most common September 2026 UK intake mistakes
- Taking standard IELTS instead of IELTS-UKVI: Standard IELTS is accepted by universities but NOT by UK Visas and Immigration. You must take IELTS-UKVI for the visa.
- Underestimating maintenance funds requirement: The Home Office requires 9 months of living costs in your account for 28 consecutive days. Post-11 November 2025, that's £13,761 for London (£1,529/month) and £10,539 outside London (£1,171/month). Insufficient funds is the #1 UK visa refusal reason.
- Submitting visa too late: July submission gives buffer. August submission means risk of late arrival, missing orientation, late accommodation move-in.
- Ignoring ATAS for STEM programmes: Many engineering, sciences, AI, and computer science Masters require ATAS certificate. Missing it delays visa by 4 to 6 weeks.
- Booking private accommodation in central London on arrival: Central London private rentals are extremely competitive in August-September. Confirm accommodation BEFORE leaving India.
