Three English tests dominate the Kerala study-abroad conversation in 2026: IELTS, PTE Academic, and the Duolingo English Test. They have very different prices, formats, turnaround times, and most importantly, very different acceptance patterns. Picking the wrong one wastes ₹15,000 and 6 weeks of preparation; picking the right one gets you to your university and visa with zero friction.
This guide compares them on the eight factors that actually matter for a Kerala student: cost, duration, result speed, score format, university acceptance, visa acceptance, difficulty, and retake rules. Plus a five-question framework to land on the right test in 60 seconds.
1.The quick answer (pick by destination)
Pick IELTS if you are going to the UK (visa requires UKVI-approved test), Australia (visa requires SELT), or any country where you want maximum acceptance certainty. IELTS is the universal default; if you don't know your destination yet, take IELTS. Cost: ₹16,250 to ₹19,000.
Pick PTE Academic if your destination is Australia (visa friendly) or Canada (since 2023 IRCC accepts PTE), you want results in 48 hours, and you prefer AI scoring over a human examiner. Cost: ₹15,900 to ₹18,900.
Pick Duolingo English Test if you are going to the United States (4,000+ universities accept including top schools), you are on a tight budget (₹2,000 to ₹5,600), and you do not need the score for a UK or Australia student visa. Duolingo is also valid for some Canadian programmes since 2023 IRCC approval.
The one rule that matters more than anything else: verify your specific university's accepted tests AND your destination country's visa-accepted tests BEFORE you book a test. Acceptance changes year to year. The right test in March 2026 may not be the right test in November 2026 for the same university.

3.IELTS Academic in detail
The International English Language Testing System. Co-owned by the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge Assessment English. It is the global default and the test you should take if you have any uncertainty about destination or programme.
Where IELTS wins
- Universal acceptance. 12,000+ organisations globally. Every major university in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Germany, France, Netherlands. Visa authorities of all five major destinations.
- Human speaking examiner. If you speak well but freeze with computer-recorded speaking tests, IELTS speaking is dramatically easier for you.
- Professional registration. Required for NMC (UK nursing registration), AHPRA (Australia nursing), and most healthcare regulatory bodies. If you are a Kerala nurse heading to UK or Australia, IELTS is non-negotiable.
- One Skill Retake. Available since 2023. If you under-perform on just one module (writing, speaking, listening, or reading), you can retake just that one module without redoing the full test. This is unique to IELTS.
Where IELTS loses
- Writing is notoriously strict. Band 7.0 in Writing is harder than Band 7.0 in the other three modules. Indian students consistently score 0.5 to 1.0 bands lower in Writing than their other modules. The Task 1 chart description is an unusual format that needs specific training.
- Speaking can be intimidating. 11 to 14 minutes face-to-face with an examiner. Test anxiety affects many students. The examiner can ask follow-up questions you did not prepare for.
- Result speed. 3 to 5 days for computer-delivered, up to 13 days for paper. Slower than PTE or Duolingo.
- Cost is highest. ₹16,250 to ₹19,000 depending on test centre and computer vs paper.
Target scores: UK Masters: 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (most universities). UK student visa: 5.5 minimum per module. Canada Masters: 6.5 overall. Australia: 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. EU universities: 6.0 to 6.5 overall.
4.PTE Academic in detail
Pearson Test of English Academic. Launched in 2009. Computer-delivered, AI-scored. Has grown rapidly in acceptance since Australian Department of Home Affairs added it to the visa SELT list. Canada IRCC added PTE in 2023.
Where PTE wins
- Fastest test centre option. Results in 1 to 2 business days. Critical if your application deadline is close.
- AI scoring is consistent. No examiner subjectivity. Indian students who find IELTS speaking examiners nerve-wracking often score significantly higher on PTE for the same level of English.
- Australia visa friendly. Australian DHA accepts PTE for student visa, Skilled Migration, and Australian PR. For Australia-bound students, PTE is the strongest choice.
- Question formats suit Indian English speakers. "Repeat sentence", "Read aloud", and "Re-tell lecture" play to the strengths of students who learned English with strong reading comprehension.
- Unlimited free score sends. You can send your PTE score to as many universities as you want for free.
Where PTE loses
- UK universities accept but UK visa does not (for some categories). Most UK universities accept PTE for admission but the UK Student Visa SELT requirement is specifically for IELTS for UKVI or other UKVI-approved tests; standard PTE Academic is not currently on that list. If your UK university accepts PTE for admission AND you do not need a visa SELT (i.e., your university confirms it via CAS), you can use PTE. Otherwise, take IELTS for UKVI.
- Strict time management. The enabling skills section and "Summarize written text" have tight time limits. Students who haven't practised the PTE format specifically often underperform even with strong English.
- Slightly fewer test centres. In Kerala, PTE test centres are concentrated in Trivandrum and Kochi. IELTS has wider coverage including Kozhikode, Thrissur, and other cities.
Target scores: UK Masters: 58 to 65 (equivalent to IELTS 6.5). Australia Masters: 58 to 65. Australian PR pathway: 65+ recommended. Canada Masters: 60+. Most US universities: 50 to 65.
5.Duolingo English Test in detail
Launched in 2014 by Duolingo. Fully online, taken at home with a webcam and microphone. Adaptive (questions get harder as you answer correctly). Has gained dramatic acceptance since 2020, particularly in US universities. IRCC (Canada) approved Duolingo in 2023.
Where Duolingo wins
- Cost. ₹2,000 to ₹5,600. The cheapest English test by a factor of 3 to 8. Massive advantage if you are on a tight budget or need to test multiple times.
- Convenience. Take it from home, any time, any day. No need to travel to a test centre or book a slot weeks in advance.
- Speed. Results in 48 hours.
- US universities. 4,000+ accept, including Yale, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon, MIT (for some programmes), Duke, NYU. For US-bound students, this is your default.
- Unlimited free score sends.
- Canada acceptance (post-2023). IRCC now accepts Duolingo for many Canadian programmes for student visa. Verify with your specific university and your local Canadian visa office.
Where Duolingo loses
- UK Student Visa. Not accepted for UKVI SELT. If you are applying for a UK Student visa, Duolingo will not work as your visa SELT.
- Australia Student Visa. Not accepted by Australian DHA. Cannot be used as your visa English proof.
- Professional registration. Not accepted by NMC, AHPRA, or most healthcare regulators. Useless for Kerala nurses heading to UK or Australia.
- Adaptive format requires practice. The first few questions are critical because they calibrate the difficulty level. Many students underperform on Duolingo not because of weak English but because they did not practise the adaptive format.
- At-home test has strict proctoring. You need a quiet room, no other people present, no phone visible, no notes, no looking away from the screen. Many students get flagged for proctoring issues and have to retest.
Target scores: US graduate programmes: 110 to 130 (equivalent to IELTS 6.5 to 7.5). Canadian programmes (if accepted): 115+. Most US programmes that accept Duolingo accept it as a primary test, not just a supplement.
6.A 5-question decision framework
Answer these in order. By the end you have your test.
- What is your destination country? UK = IELTS for UKVI. Australia = IELTS or PTE. Canada = IELTS or PTE (Duolingo also valid for many programmes). USA = any of the three (Duolingo is the cost winner).
- Are you a nurse or in a healthcare licensed profession? If yes, IELTS or OET. Nothing else. Duolingo and PTE are not accepted by professional regulators.
- Is budget a major constraint? If yes and destination is USA, take Duolingo. You save ₹13,000+ per attempt, which matters if you need multiple attempts.
- How fast do you need results? Application deadline in less than 14 days = PTE or Duolingo. More than 14 days = any of the three.
- Do you panic on face-to-face speaking? If yes, PTE or Duolingo (both AI-scored). If you speak better with a human, IELTS.
For the indecisive Kerala student:
Take IELTS. It works everywhere. The other two are optimisations for specific situations; IELTS is the safe default that costs you ₹3,000 to ₹15,000 more but guarantees universal acceptance. The mental overhead of "did I pick the right test" is worth more than the rupees saved.
7.Preparation time and where to prepare in Kerala
For a Kerala student with a Plus Two English grade above 80% or a college English medium degree, here are realistic prep timelines to hit target scores from a cold start.
- IELTS 6.5 from cold: 6 to 10 weeks of structured prep with mock tests. Writing is the bottleneck for most Kerala students; budget 50% of prep time on writing alone.
- PTE 58 (equivalent to IELTS 6.5): 4 to 6 weeks of focused prep. The format is unfamiliar so prep is mostly about format familiarity. Once you know the format, scoring is consistent.
- Duolingo 115 (equivalent to IELTS 7.0): 2 to 4 weeks. The shortest prep window because the test is shortest and most adaptive. But the adaptive format means you cannot "guess your way" to a higher score; the calibration is brutal.
Cokonet Overseas runs in-house coaching for all three from our Trivandrum and Kochi offices. Group batches typically run for 6 weeks with weekly mock tests. We do not currently offer Duolingo-specific coaching at scale because demand is lower; we redirect Duolingo-bound students to free official prep materials plus our IELTS coaching for foundation building, which transfers well.
8.Final word and FAQs
English tests are gatekeepers. The wrong test choice costs you a university offer, a visa, or an extra ₹15,000 plus 6 weeks of your time. The right choice is invisible: you get accepted and move on. Spend an hour researching your specific university and destination's requirements before booking. That hour saves you the price of a second test attempt.
Frequently asked questions
If I am applying to universities in 3 countries, which test should I take?
IELTS, almost always. The combination of UK, Australia, Canada, USA, or any European destination means IELTS is the only one accepted everywhere. PTE is accepted in Australia and Canada but not universally for UK visa. Duolingo is great for USA but limited elsewhere. Take IELTS once and use the score across all applications.
Can I take a test more than once?
Yes. IELTS and PTE have no waiting period between attempts. Duolingo has a 21-day waiting period with a maximum of 2 attempts in 30 days. Universities will accept your highest score; immigration authorities use your most recent valid score. Many Kerala students take the test twice; the second attempt is usually 0.5 to 1.0 bands higher because of familiarity.
What is IELTS One Skill Retake?
Introduced in 2023, this lets you retake just one of the four IELTS modules (listening, reading, writing, or speaking) within 60 days of your original test if you under-performed on one module only. Cost is about 60% of a full retest. Hugely useful for Kerala students who score 7.0 in three modules and 6.0 in writing; you only retake writing. Unique to IELTS.
Will paper-based IELTS be discontinued?
IDP has announced phasing out paper-based IELTS by mid-2026. Computer-based IELTS continues with no change. If you are scheduled for paper-based, confirm your test centre still offers it in 2026; otherwise switch to computer-based. The two formats have identical content and scoring; only the delivery differs.
My university accepts Duolingo but Canadian visa requires IELTS. What do I do?
As of 2023, IRCC (Canada) accepts Duolingo for many student visa applications. Verify the specific list with your visa application portal. If your particular case requires IELTS, take IELTS. The general principle: university requirement is one thing; visa requirement is another. Both must be satisfied. Always check both before booking your test.
Are Kerala test centres reliable?
Yes. IELTS has 5+ centres in Kerala (Trivandrum, Kochi, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kollam). PTE has centres in Trivandrum and Kochi. Duolingo is at-home so no centre needed. Quality and standardisation are uniform across centres for IELTS and PTE; do not pay extra fees to anyone claiming to "guarantee" a particular centre slot. Book directly through British Council, IDP, or Pearson websites.
