September 2026 Canada intake: the complete Kerala student timeline.

If you are aiming for September 2026 Masters intake in Canada, here is exactly what to do month-by-month from now through arrival. With visa timing, education loan checkpoints, and the regular study permit stream document checklist (SDS closed permanently 8 November 2024 — all Kerala applicants now go through the regular stream).

September 2026 is the main Canadian Masters intake. About 75 percent of Kerala students who enrol in Canadian universities pick this window. If you are reading this in May 2026 and aiming for September 2026 entry, you are entering the final stretch. The IELTS should already be done, university offer letters in hand or arriving soon, and visa documentation is the next major checkpoint.

This page lays out the month-by-month timeline through September 2026, with what should be complete at each stage and what to focus on next. Based on what we manage for every cycle from our Trivandrum and Kochi offices.

1.Where you should be right now (May 2026)

  • IELTS or equivalent test: Completed with minimum 6.5 overall, 6.0 in each band (strong scores reduce refusal risk under the regular stream; CLB 7 / IELTS 6.0 each band remains the practical floor).
  • University applications: Submitted to 5 to 7 universities by January-March 2026 round.
  • Offer letters: Acceptances coming in between February and June 2026. Conditional offers usually convert by July.
  • Education loan: Pre-sanctioned letter from at least one lender (HDFC Credila, Avanse, or ICICI). Sanction letter in hand by May-June.
  • GIC of CAD 22,895: Initiated with Scotiabank or ICICI Bank Canada. Confirmation in hand.
  • Tuition deposit: Paid for your chosen university (typically CAD 5,000 to 15,000 first instalment).

If you are missing any of the above, contact us immediately. Some can still be done with compressed timelines; others require shifting to January 2027 intake.

2.June 2026: Finalise documents and submit visa application

This is the critical month. Visa application submitted by mid-to-late June gives you 8 to 12 weeks of processing, putting decision in mid-to-late August. That allows time for travel logistics, accommodation, and a buffer for any unexpected refusal-resolution.

  • Document compilation: Final passport copy, photographs, attested mark sheets, IELTS TRF, offer letter, GIC certificate, loan sanction letter, tuition payment receipt, SOP, sponsor letter.
  • Medical exam: Schedule with IRCC panel physician in Trivandrum or Kochi by 1st June. Upfront medical exam speeds processing by 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Visa application: Submit by 15-20 June (regular stream, since SDS closed November 2024). Pay fees online (CAD 235 application + biometrics).
  • Biometrics: Schedule at VFS Trivandrum or Kochi within 2 weeks of online submission.

3.July to August 2026: Processing and parallel preparation

While the visa is processing, do not sit idle. Use these 8 weeks for parallel preparation.

  • Track application: Monitor IRCC status weekly. Regular stream processing now runs 8 to 14 weeks at IRCC New Delhi (slower than the old SDS target); track weekly status.
  • Accommodation booking: Most Canadian universities open student housing applications in May and close by July. Off-campus options in Toronto/Vancouver are competitive; secure a 2 to 4 month initial stay by July.
  • Flight booking: Tentative booking only (refundable) until visa is approved. Confirm flight once passport is returned with visa.
  • Forex card and initial cash: Once visa is approved, get a forex card loaded with CAD 4,000 to 6,000 for first-month expenses. Some funds in Canadian bank account too.
  • Health insurance: Buy student health insurance if your province does not provide automatic coverage in the first 3 months.
  • Orientation prep: Read your university's pre-arrival guide. Join the international students WhatsApp/Facebook group.

4.September 2026: Departure and arrival

  • Final document check: Passport with study permit, offer letter, GIC certificate, vaccination records, last 6 months bank statements, flight ticket, accommodation confirmation, address of port of entry officer to contact if questioned.
  • Customs declaration: Pre-fill the goods declaration. List electronics, cash, items in checked baggage.
  • Border interview: The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer at the port of entry will ask about your programme, university, accommodation, and finances. Be calm, factual, and ready with documents. Most interviews last 5 to 15 minutes.
  • First week: Open Canadian bank account, get SIN (Social Insurance Number) if working, register with university international student office, attend orientation.
  • First month: Settle into accommodation, register for classes, apply for part-time work (if planning), connect with the Kerala student community in your city.

5.Education loan checkpoints across the timeline

The loan process runs in parallel with the visa process. Key checkpoints:

  • By May: Loan pre-sanction letter in hand. This is what you use for the GIC and tuition deposit.
  • By June: Full sanction letter required for visa submission. Bank/NBFC disburses initial amount to GIC account and university for first tuition instalment.
  • By July: Tuition disbursement for first semester (if not already paid). Some universities require fees by mid-August.
  • By September: Living expenses tranche released to your Canadian bank account, typically CAD 1,500 to 2,500 monthly via the GIC mechanism.
  • Ongoing: Tuition disbursements per semester. Monthly living expense release until GIC funds exhausted (typically 12 months).

6.The 5 most common September 2026 intake mistakes

  1. Submitting the visa application incomplete: IRCC officers reject on missing documents. Use a checklist or work with a consultancy.
  2. Waiting until July to start the medical exam: Panel physician availability tightens significantly in July-August. Book by late May.
  3. Picking the cheapest GIC bank without checking processing time: Some smaller banks take 10 to 15 days for GIC certification, delaying visa submission. Scotiabank and ICICI Bank Canada are the fastest.
  4. Ignoring the upfront medical exam option: Doing the medical exam BEFORE submitting reduces visa processing time by 2 to 3 weeks. Worth the small extra effort.
  5. Leaving accommodation booking until visa approval: Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal off-campus housing fills up by July. Book a flexible/refundable option by June even before visa is confirmed.

7.What if you are running behind for September 2026?

If as of May 2026 you do not have IELTS done, offer letters in hand, or loan pre-sanction, September 2026 is at serious risk. Realistic options:

  • Pivot to January 2027 intake. Most Canadian universities have a January intake for popular Masters programmes. Use the extra 4 months to strengthen your application and complete documents properly.
  • Apply for September 2026 with a rolling-admission university. Some Canadian universities admit on a rolling basis through July. Application possible but visa timing is then very tight.
  • Consider UK September 2026 intake. Faster visa processing (3 to 6 weeks vs Canada's 6 to 12 weeks). Worth evaluating if your profile suits UK admission requirements.

8.Next steps

If you are on track for September 2026, the next 4 to 6 weeks are decisive. Submit visa application by 20 June at the latest.
